Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is performed for women who have lost their breasts due to breast cancer or other diseases, or for those who have congenital deformities of their breasts. It is advisable to consult a plastic surgeon before the breast is removed in order to improve the results of breast reconstruction, because in some cases it is possible to restore the breast during the mastectomy procedure.

During this operation attempts are made not only to form a new breast but also to return self-confidence, alleviate emotional discomfort and to increase the quality of life of the patient. In general, a new breast can be formed either by using autologous tissues from the same patient, or by using synthetic implants. It is important to know that whatever choice of breast reconstruction technique is made, a single procedure will not be enough to achieve good results. Often additional procedures such as adjustments of the breast shape, areola and nipple reconstruction, or reduction of the opposite breast need to be undertaken, until eventually the patient is satisfied with the results.

Breast reduction is recommended for women who are suffering back and shoulder pain, have to limit their physical activity or experience psychological and emotional discomfort due to large breasts. The aim of the procedure is to remove excess fat and glandular tissue and change the shape of the breast so that it better matches body proportions. Breast reduction is always performed together with a breast lift, so the location of the nipple and areola complex changes. The size of the areola can be also reduced at the patient’s request.

The patient is advised to wear a special bra for a few weeks after the procedure. Usually patients return to work within 10-14 days. More intense physical activity should be avoided for at least several weeks. The final cosmetic result will be visible after several months.

Breast lift is a substantially different procedure from breast augmentation. The aim of this procedure is to change the breast shape rather than increase the volume. Sometimes breast lift can be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation, often with very good results. During a breast lift the breasts are not only elevated but also reshaped. Excess skin is removed and the nipple and areola complex might be reduced or relocated according to the patient’s request.

The effects of cosmetic breast lift surgery are generally long lasting, but age, future pregnancies, weight change, lifestyle and other factors will affect the appearance of the breasts so they might sag again. Usually patients return to work in a week but some restrictions on physical activity should be followed for about a month.

Breast shape, size and appearance depend on many factors, including age, heredity, weight changes, pregnancy, sun exposure, physical activity, and congenital conditions. Having selected the desired size, shape and texture of implant, the surgeon then forms a “pocket” of breast tissue into which the implant is placed during the procedure.

Breast augmentation with implants can be carried out in various ways. The choice depends on the patient’s preference and on the recommendations given by the plastic surgeon during the consultation. The implant can be put in place through an incision in the armpit, through an incision under the breast or through an incision around the nipple. It is also possible to choose whether the implant will be under the gland (between the breast tissue and pectoral muscle), or under the muscle (either entirely or partly beneath the pectoral muscles, against the bony chest wall). Suitable implants can increase breast volume, provide the desired shape and reverse loss of breast firmness. It is important to note that breast augmentation alone cannot correct considerable breast ptosis; this requires a breast lift as an additional procedure.

Patients who opt for breast augmentation with implants should note that, although the results of this procedure are expected to be long lasting, the procedure cannot suspend normal age-related changes in breast shape, skin elasticity and volume.
